Historical Society and Museum
Visit the the Harriet Farnsworth Powell Historical Museum in the Historic Essex Center at 3 Browns River Road. The Essex Community Historical Society opens the museum in the summer.

The Essex Free Library located in the Historic Essex Center at 1 Browns River Road and aside from books, offers up loaned passes on Vermont State Parks, and the "Library of Things" where patrons can check out tool kits, snowshoes, sewing machines, and more.

Burn Permits
Create an account to apply for a fire burn permit and to check for burn conditions. If risk levels are high, a total fire ban could be in place. Know before you burn. You are REQUIRED to call (802) 992-1671 before starting your burn to be sure there are not active restrictions.
Dog Licenses
Dogs must be licensed no later than April 1st each year. You must supply a copy of a current rabies certificate, owner's name, address, and contact information, dog breed, color, age, size (small, medium, large) and date of spay or neuter.

Vermont Department of Public Safety
The statutory purpose of the Department of Public Safety is to promote the detection and prevention of crime, to participate in searches for lost and missing persons, and to assist in cases of statewide or local disasters or emergencies. In order to carry out this purpose the Department is organized into six divisions: the Vermont State Police, Vermont Emergency Management, Vermont Crime Information Center, Radio Technology Services, Vermont Forensics Lab, and the Division of Fire Safety.

Parking an unattended vehicle of any type on any street road, alley, park or public grounds is prohibited during the period of December 1st through April 1st of the next year between the hours of 12:00 midnight and 7:00 am for snow removal. Towing and storage fees could apply if your vehicle is towed.

Homestead Declaration
By Vermont law, property owners whose homes meet the definition of a Vermont homestead must file a Homestead Declaration annually by the April Filing deadline. If you own a home in Vermont, you will want to see if you can claim your home.
Property Taxes
Property tax bills are mailed to property owners in August. Taxes may be paid upon receipt, or can be paid by the due dates on the bill. The first installment is due in September and the second installment is due in March. Payments must be postmarked by the due dates to avoid a penalty. A drop box is available for payments. A safe excavation project starts by first contacting Dig Safe to request utility marks on your property. Call Dig Safe at 8-1-1 or submit a request online. Damaging an underground facility is dangerous - for you, and for the people around you. A broken pipe or cable also causes outages, expensive repairs and legal issues. This is why state law requires contractors and homeowners to notify Dig Safe before digging, even on private land.

We are northwest Vermont’s integrated energy services company. We offer customers clean, affordable and reliable natural gas service, award-winning energy efficiency programs, home and business energy equipment service and maintenance, and a renewable option for families and businesses.
Vermont Telecommunications Equipment Distribution Program
The VTEDP is a statewide program that loans telecommunications equipment to enable low-income deaf, deafblind, hard of hearing, and individuals with physical disabilities to communicate by telephone. If you can't use a traditional telephone, there may be other options. This is an equipment loan program. Examples of equipment include amplified telephones, captioned telephones, devices for HCO, VCO, TTY communication, and tablets/laptops for ASL video communication. The program is administered by the Vermont Center for Independent Living.
Water & Sewer Utilities
- For those serviced by the Town of Essex, water and sewer bills are issued three times per year and are due in April, August, and December. Payments may be mailed or paid at the Town Office or online. A drop box is available for payments.
- Before starting a construction project, be sure to avoid costly damages and call the Town Water & Sewer division for location of your sewer and water lines. (802) 878-1344.
